--------- CROSS-WORKS 1.30 Additional Information (File READ.ME) -------- 1. Please make the following correction to the manual. On Page 61, item 3 (last paragraph), please change the beginning of the third sentence to read: If "123" does NOT appear on the IBM screen, but "ABC" DOES appear on the Apple screen, then... 2. Please follow the installation instructions carefully in the "Getting started" section of the manual. 3. If you encounter any problems getting your PC and Apple to communicate, please see Appendix B. 4. If you have a IIGS on an AppleTalk network, you may have to temporarily disable AppleTalk by setting Slot 7 to "Your Card" from the "Control Panel" (Control-Apple-Esc), and then re-boot before you will be able to communicate, due to a problem in the IIGS firmware. 5. *** IMPORTANT! *** If you have a IIe, your Super Serial Card MUST have switch SW2-6 DOWN (OFF). This disables interrupts from the serial port. Otherwise, the program may crash on startup or exit. If you have an Apple IIe with one Super Serial card in Slot 1 attached to a serial printer (such as an Imagewriter), be sure to change the card from "Printer" mode to "Communications" mode when you move it from Slot 1 to Slot 2 for use with CROSS-WORKS. This is described in your SSC manual. In particular, you need to make sure the triangle on the "jumper block" on the SSC is pointing toward "Modem", and that switches SW1-5 and SW1-6 are in the "up" (on) position. Switch SW-2 must be DOWN (OFF). The remaining dip switches need not be changed. Non-Apple brand Super Serial Card clones may not have the same exact dip switches or jumpers; consult your manual for the equivalent settings (see item 6 below, for example). 6. For ENVOY super serial card (by SMT Inc.), configure your card for modem operation as given in the manual. Make sure that the cable is connected to the "M" header (not the "P" header) on the card, that jumper JP1 connects the middle pin and the "P" pin, and that dip switches SW1-5, SW1-6, and SW1-7 are all ON and that SW2-6 and SW2-7 are OFF. The position of the remaining switches does not matter. 7. For PC-TRANSPORTER, use DOS commands similar to the following examples to actually move the files (see page 45 for more information): TRANSFER Aname Iname.AWP (for AppleWorks Word Proc to IBM) TRANSFER Aname Iname.ADB (for AppleWorks Data Base to IBM) TRANSFER Aname Iname.ASP (for AppleWorks Spreadsheet to IBM) TRANSFER Iname.AWP Aname ($1A) (for IBM to AppleWorks Word Proc.) TRANSFER Iname.ADB Aname ($19) (for IBM to AppleWorks Data Base) TRANSFER Iname.ASP Aname ($1B) (for IBM to AppleWorks Spreadsheet) where Aname is the desired legal ProDOS file name and Iname is the desired legal IBM name (maximum of 8 characters, no periods). 8. A few serial ports for IBM-compatibles have jumpers or switches to select whether the port is set up as a DCE (Data Communications Equipment) or a DTE (Data Terminal Equipment). If so, make sure your port is set for DCE operation. 9. Thank you for choosing CROSS-WORKS.
