On your IIgs, unshrink using GS-ShrinkIt to obtain FrotzGS To play one of the Infocom or Infocom-type games (mostly adventures) for IIgs, you start one of the executable interpreters-- such as by double-clicking its icon on the IIgs Finder display. What the interpreter interprets is called "zcode", the language in which the games are written. Most of the Infocom games in the Lost Treasures set are zcode3 or "z3" files. Some are z5. Nearly all of the "Infocom-type" games playable on the IIgs are z5. Lost Treasures Interpreters LOST1.SYS16 and Lost2.sys16 are interpreters from the Big Red Computer Club (1993). They were originally included in Activision's IIgs version of The Lost Treasures of Infocom. LOST1.SYS16 is the "Standard Interpreter". Game text appears in the standard desktop window with scrollbars and options to select fonts. Saved games include the 8K window display buffer (i.e. stuff you can scroll through at time of a save will be available when the saved game is restored). The Standard Interpreter offers a generally better, more flexible display than the others; but, it can run only z3 games. LOST2.SYS16 is the "Advanced Interpreter". Game text is in 'text mode' with no font options and no scrollbar. This interpreter allows switching games without need to quit and reload program. The Advanced Interpreter does not save a text buffer and, when loading a game saved under the SI, it ignores text buffer information. The Advanced Interpreter can run z3 and z5 games. When you start one of the Lost Treasures interpreters directly (e.g. by double clicking on its icon), it shows the Lost Treasures title screen and then lists the games it finds in the current folder which you can run via the interpreter. For the AI, this could include all of the adventures. FrotzGS Ftotz was developed by Stefan Jokisch. FrotzGS is the IIgs version of Frotz developed by Evan Day (1996-1997). It can run most z1-z5 and z7-z8 games. There is limited support for z6 (graphics) games. It will show font features (e.g. bold, italic, colors) which Lost2' ignores and, in general, can run more of the newer releases . Games which should be played using only FrotzGS will be marked with an asterisk (*) in listings. So, Lost1' is the preferred interpreter; but, it runs only z3 games. Lost2' runs z3 and z5 games. It is a bit faster than FrotzGS (and it seems to be the only interpreter which runs Beyond Zork correctly). FrotzGS can run some games which neither Lost1' nor Lost2' can run. Games saved running one interpreter may be restored and played using the other so long as the game is playable on the selected interpreter. R/
