ZIP.SYSTEM INSTALLATION DOCS by Tom Hoover The enclosed configuration program will add "Zip.System" to any application disk that you choose. "Zip.System" will configure your ZipChip automatically any time that you boot the modified application disk. (Otherwise, you have to boot your Zip Utilites disk, configure the chip, change disks, and then run your application). "Zip.System" and the associated installation programs will run on any Apple ][ computer. They do not require 80 columns, etc. They do required ProDOS, however. ----- INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Make a backup copy of the ZipChip Utilities disk that you received with your ZipChip. 2. Copy the files "zip.system" and "zip.sys.instl" onto your BACKUP ZipChip Utilities disk. Additionally, replace the original "startup" program with the enclosed "startup" program. 3. Boot this ZipChip Utilities disk and select "Zip Configurer". After you have configured and saved a "zipcfg" file, you may select "Zip Startup Install". You will be prompted for slot and drive of the disk onto which the pre-boot will be installed. When prompted for the slot, you may remove your Zip Utilities disk (if necessary) and insert the disk to be modified. This program searches for only the first ".system" file, as that is the one that will be executed when booting the disk. 4. During the installation, any "xxxxx.system" files that you have on the selected volume will be renamed "xxxxx.sys" (if they precede "Zip.System" in the volume directory). This is necessary so that ProDOS will load "Zip.System" before any other "xxxxx.system" file. If you do not want any files to be renamed, perform the following before running the installation program: a. Using your favorite file utility program, rename the first ".system" file on the disk to be modified to "temp.file" b. Now, make a copy of "temp.file" and give it the original ".system" file name. c. Delete "temp.file" These steps will insure that "Zip.System" is the first file on the disk to be modified. The installation program will then leave all file names alone. Please send any comments/suggestions via GEnie mail, and I will make the appropriate changes. Tom Hoover
